I’m going to let you in on a little secret that can add a $1000’s of dollars to your bottom line with minimum investment of your time.

Hah…no this is not a get rich quick scheme, but it is a good way to add value to your current members and friends in the community and receive a referral commission from sharing important information. Just like when you referred your brother to your real estate agent and they sent you a $100 gift card, this is the same thing, but maybe easier. To prove my point, I’m going to show just exactly how much I’ve made from referral marketing since my gym opened in April 2013. After you see the numbers, I’ll break it down step by step how to implement into your gym, today.

Reebok Referral Revenue

Build it. Push it. Let it ride.

That first graph is my referral profit from recommending Reebok products on my website. You’re probably freaking out right now and are calling BS, which is okay, I’ll break it down for you. Reebok has a great program where you can publish an affiliate/referral link and they pay you 10% of whatever is sold after that link is clicked. As you can see in my graphic above, the first month I referred Reebok $3000 worth of business, which in return they gave me ~$300. Something crazy happened the next month and I hit nearly $1400 in commissions. If you do the math, that’s nearly $14,000 in sales that Reebok received. As you see the rest of the graph, there are many peaks and valleys. All in all since I’ve recommended Reebok products, I’ve brought home ~$5200 in straight profit. ūüôā

How did I do it? It’s pretty simple, good timing and a little bit of luck. Whenever Reebok came out with something I knew people were going to search for, I put up a blog post on CrossFitCOMO.com highlighting that product with my special affiliate/referral link that let Reebok know I was referring visitors to my blog. For example, I posted in July 2013 about the Reebok CrossFit Games Nano 3.0’s and it turns out a lot of people were buying those shoes and google ranked my website on the first page for that search term.¬†Google’s algorithms saw I was providing good content and decided to push the blog post all the way to the first page. I think at the time, it was top five when you searched for the term “Reebok CrossFit Nano 3.0 Games”

Another way¬†I introduced these new products to people at my gym through emails and facebook updates. Letting them¬†know if they wanted to order this Reebok gear, to use my link and I’d make a small commission. Many of my athletes gladly did this as it didn’t cost them anything and they were giving back to the gym.

I leveraged my network.

In my post titled “Marketing and Sales Automation Series: Email” I briefly detail the experience people get when they first join my gym. Most of their on-boarding emails are providing¬†so much free, valuable content. But we know once you¬†drink the CrossFit Koolaid, you want to start wearing Reeboks, Rogue Gear, use Jump ‘N Rope, or other great products. So I added to their on-boarding and auto-responder emails, they get product recommendations using my referral/affiliate link. These are scattered throughout the email series so that I’m not directly selling, just reminding them to help out the gym when they are purchasing products anyways. I’ve received many emails from members asking what the specific link to use to support the gym. Win. Win.

In addition to email blasts, I also include those links on the bottom of my homepage at CrossFit COMO. I get a few random clicks here and there from that link.

Damn, he’s lucky

Maybe, or I was intentionally the right place at the right time. But there’s more.

Reebok was by far the biggest success I’ve had in referral/affiliate marketing with CrossFit COMO. However, there are many other great partnerships you can develop both locally and nationally.

Here’s another example:

We partnered up with a local company that offers healthy meal delivery service. Not 100% paleo/zone, but pretty damn close and it tastes good. Our agreement? I get 10% of revenue from every person that I referred and uses my code “CFCOMO”(they get 25% off first order) when they start their recurring weekly meal delivery service. In 4 months, I’ve made $334 or ~$83/month by sharing a great resource that benefits the health of my members. That’s money that I don’t have to put a lot of time in to earn. We include their information in our new athlete welcome packet, they get reintroduced to it during our Foundations program¬†and then a few weeks after they graduate, in an email reminding them how they can take the next step in their fitness journey by adding the nutrition piece.

Affiliate Marketing vs Wholesale

In addition to being a Reebok affiliate, we also offer Reebok gear as a Reebok Recognized Gym, where we can purchase gear at wholesale pricing(typically 40-50% of MSRP). Most supplement companies operate this way as opposed to being an affiliate model. They require you to purchase a lot of product up front, that you have to hold in stock and tie up cash, resources, time and take inventory(insert pukey smiley face). The positive side you make a higher margin on those products than that 10% I get for someone clicking my link to buy something. Wholesaling and tying all that cash up in products make sense for the right kind of gym, but for many CrossFit Affiliates, affiliate marketing is the way to go for supplements.

One of my favorite disruptors in the supplement space is a company that I’ve recently partnered with at CrossFit COMO called Game Plan.

CrossFit COMO Game Plan

What I love about Game Plan is a variety of things. First, they operate more on the affiliate model, where I send people to my specific website(http://www.crossfitcomo.com/game-plan) and they order directly through there for their supplements and get 10% off. Second, I don’t have to stock any products and make a 20% commission off each sale, higher than typical affiliate plans. Third, they sponsor all my coaches and me with free product! Have you ever tried to get a supplement company in the CrossFit industry to send you free samples, let alone free products? It’s an absolute pain in the butt if you’re a smaller affiliate and once you have a little bit of a name behind you,¬†still a challenge. Quite frankly, it’s annoying. Fourth, they have a specific marketing plan designed to implement Game Plan and supplementation directly into your gym(i.e. make it easy) and finally, they send out regular weekly emails with education tools to help your coaches understand supplements.

If you’re interested in learning more about Game Plan and how it can help your affiliate tackle the supplement game, fill out this form and Jonny from Game Plan will get back to you quickly.

Additional Referral Opportunities/How do I get started?

If you ever wonder if a company has an affiliate or wholesale opportunity, typically scroll all the way down to the footer of the page and looking for either one of those terms.¬†I highlighted a few of the big ones we use at CrossFit COMO, but there are so many more that I’ve honestly lost count/track of them. We have a banner for Rogue on the bottom of our page that gives back only 5%, but we’ve generated almost $100 from it since posting it in our footer on our website. It’s not much money, but it’s a nice little bonus that I’ve used to buy additional kettlebells for the business. I’m sure if I was more proactive with Rogue, I could generate more sales. Maybe we’ll test that out in a future blog post.
